Introduction

Well the May-June period turned out to be very eventful! Mark did not make the teaching and speaking engagements that were planned for the June period, because he was flattened by Malaria! He was on a quinine IV for a few days and it took three weeks or so for him to get his full strength back. However your prayers were answered as the Lord raised up others to speak in his place and greatly used them in the various places.

Then, whilst still weak from malaria, some thieves invaded our property, tied up the night watchman and surprised us both in our bed! It was a bit of a shock to wake up to find two men in your room. However the Lord massively over ruled and the threatened violence did not materialise. We lost possessions but were unharmed, as was the watchman. We were very grateful to God that we were alone at home and that our children were all away at school, so they were spared this experience. Throughout all of this we have experienced a very real sense that God is in control and have been greatly helped by Him to cope. Your prayers have been effective before God on our behalf.

Even as we write, at the start of a new school term, we have just heard of an accident at Chengelo where one of the primary school children has been seriously injured. A water heating boiler (wood fired) blew up on the first day of term, not long after we had dropped our children off. In the providence of God, Dr McAdam was delayed in dropping his eldest boy off, and so was on the scene to help deal with the injuries to this girl and the lesser injuries to others. The exploding water boiler was not an "act of God", but the presence of the doctor certainly was. The 10 year old girl is an a hospital in Johannesburg making a slow recovery. We are "caught", are we not, between Psalm 91 and Isa. 43:2/Ps 23:4. Between the promise of God that though ten thousand fall at our side, "it" (disaster and death) will not come near us, and the certainty of the mystery of evil and natural disaster. We cannot escape the pain, suffering and death surrounds us in this sick and dying world, ruled as it is by the prince of darkness and by sin itself. Yet we know that we do not walk alone, for the Lord walks with us through times of pain and trial. He says again, "When you walk through the waters .... through the valley of the shadow of death, ... I will be with you, my rod and my staff will be your comfort and strength there". Pray for those who so much need to know and be conscious of the presence of the Almighty at this very moment.

News on the church front

In July Zambia has an annual long holiday weekend, which makes a good time to hold conferences and seminars. This year we held a Bible teaching conference in the middle of Kasama. 17 of our church congregations sent people to attend and it was a good time of fellowship. It was a chance too for the Mission Fellowship Team to give some reports of the mission work throughout the Province.

Some of the main current points for prayer are;

· A Zambian couple is needed to move to Isoka
town to pioneer the work in that district, 200 kms east of Kasama. The church in the town needs a lot of discipling and teaching, as do a few preaching points further east of the town.

In September we have a visit from Marco Vedder. He and his wife Steffi and two children are from Germany. Marco will be with us for a week to discuss with local church leaders and ourselves the possibility of their involvement in the work here.

They were in Congo and lost a lot when they had to leave quickly due to the civil war there. Pray for clear guidance as they seek very much from the Lord a new place where they can be involved in leadership training and Bible teaching.
