Brief History of

Dunvant Gospel Hall

hall.jpg (17252 bytes)

The present Dunvant Gospel Hall built to house believers was built between 1927-1928.

Convinced that the Bible showed a simple way and pattern of meeting, believers started to meet in 1915 in 'Glanrhyd'.  At this time many cottage meetings were going on around the country.

Later meetings were held in the open-air including a tent campaign in 1926 at the bottom of Goetre Fawr Road. During this time quite a number were saved and went on to form the now growing fellowship. The children’s services were held at this time in the old Wesleyan Chapel and were very popular.

The present site was chosen and work commenced in 1927 with money coming through gifts and loans from members. Members and craftsmen such as plasterers and stonemasons undertook the work; the stone coming locally from Bevexe Farm Quarry. The Hall’s architect was Mr. Kerr who was also Architect for the Gospel Hall in Port Talbot.

Whilst the Hall was being built there was a terrific storm with strong gusts of wind which caused the walls to sway. The roof had been built 2ft. higher than it should have been – hence the buttresses on the side.

Once completed the hall was filled for the opening meeting on August Bank Holiday in 1928 .  Tea was served in the hut (located where the petrol station is today) which was part of Killay Chapel.  More facilities (such as toilets) were added years later.
